The Pennsylvania Supreme Court’s decision last week to halt the publication of a widely anticipated grand jury report about alleged sexual abuse of minors in the Catholic Church caused a stir across the state, but, perhaps, for the wrong reasons.

According to several attorneys familiar with grand jury proceedings, the Supreme Court’s decision is extremely important, but, while many criticized the high court for effectively silencing victims of abuse, grand jury practitioners said the decision comes on the heels of increasing confusion over the grand jury process and may signal that the justices want to make significant changes to the role that grand juries play in Pennsylvania.
