Over the past 18 months, the country saw the U.S. Supreme Court rule that same-sex couples have a constitutionally protected right to marry, Caitlyn Jenner announced that she was transitioning her gender, and North Carolina passed House Bill 2, a law that, among other things, prohibits municipalities from passing anti-discrimination ordinances and requires people to use public restrooms based on their sex as shown on their birth certificate.
