It had long been my ambition to bring one of the country’s most esteemed economists to address the Philadelphia Estate Planning Council. Therefore, I was pleased when Anirban Basu accepted my invitation to address the PEPC at its March 19 meeting at the Union League. Basu, who in addition to being an economist is also a prominent lawyer, proved to be a highly informative speaker. As one attendee said: “Mr. Basu is a very smart man who kept me informed throughout his entire speech with a great deal of valuable and practical information. I think of most economists as being boring; Mr. Basu, instead, galvanized my attention and added to my understanding of how our current economic situation will affect my decisions about taxes, estate planning, and employment.”

Indeed, Basu’s speech, titled “Up for the Rebound,” addressed the country’s nascent economic expansion, its sustainability and its ramifications. He focused his attention not only on the U.S. economy, but also on the global economy, financial markets, labor markets, real estate and other salient aspects of the economic environment. Throughout his presentation, I took notes of his salient points and have paraphrased much of what he had to say.
