PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) – Federal and state officials are asking a federal judge to dismiss a lawsuit by a North Providence woman who says she was illegally detained as a possible illegal immigrant.

A hearing on the officials’ motion to dismiss the case is set for Friday morning in U.S. District Court in Providence.

The Rhode Island ACLU filed the lawsuit last year on behalf of Ada Morales against U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the Rhode Island prison system director and others.

Morales says she was born in Guatemala and became a U.S. citizen in 1995, but was twice detained as a possible illegal immigrant in 2004 and 2009. The lawsuit alleges federal and state officials often ignore constitutional requirements when they detain people on immigration charges.

Federal and state officials deny the allegations.
