When Ballard Spahr adopted equity into our diversity and inclusion strategy nearly two years ago, it was a natural evolution that reflected our firm culture and society at large. We recognized that robust diversity and inclusion—representation across varied perspectives through empowering colleagues from all backgrounds—are made possible in a culture of equity.

That has meant an intensive internal focus on equity as a key component in unlocking the potential of diverse talent and delivering superior results for clients. Our elected board and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Council was determined that the firm be thoughtful in incorporating equity as part of our diversity and inclusion core values. We sought to understand and define what a commitment to equity would mean for the firm—and how we could achieve it. We resolved to empower a genuine, informed, and deliberate shift in mindset and culture, not to add equity simply out of social pressure or performative endeavor.
