According to several members of Philadelphia’s trial bar, the overwhelming feeling they had watching one of their own represent former President Donald Trump during his recent impeachment was “embarrassment.”

Not necessarily because of the performance that Michael van der Veen delivered last week in securing an acquittal in the U.S. Senate for Trump. But rather, they said, they were upset that a prominent member of their ranks was delivering a fiery defense of a president who for four years seemed to have pushed policies, and expressed views on the rule of law, that were diametrically opposed to everything the local bar stands for.
