This week we commemorate the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Recent events in our nation’s capital remind us yet again of the importance of Dr. King’s message of nonviolence. As our country starts to explore how we may begin to heal deep wounds of anger and division, Dr. King’s work stands as a reminder that reconciliation is society’s ultimate goal.

Dr. King is perhaps best remembered for his legendary “I Have a Dream” speech, which he delivered during the 1963 March on Washington. He was, of course, among the most powerful orators of the 20th century. However, Dr. King’s brilliance went beyond his oratorical abilities. It was Dr. King’s deep commitment to the philosophy of nonviolence that rendered his teachings timeless.
