John “Gus” Hoefling, who served as a strength coach for both the Philadelphia Eagles football team and the Philadelphia Phillies baseball team, has sued the makers of smokeless tobacco products Skoal and Red Man chewing tobacco over claims that the products led him to develop head and neck cancer.

Hoefling filed a lawsuit in the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas on Thursday, raising claims of negligence, strict liability, design defect and fraudulent concealment against several companies that made and sold the chewing tobacco products.
