The Philadelphia Bar Association has announced that Mark Tarasiewicz is no longer serving as its executive director.
Tarasiewicz, who has been with the bar association in one capacity or another for more than two decades, had served as executive director starting in January 2014.
A brief press release that the bar issued Monday did not say whether Tarasiewicz quit, or was asked to leave, and a spokesman for the bar declined to comment beyond the press release.
The release added that Philadelphia Bar chancellor Mary Platt “wished him well in any new endeavor.” Platt also announced in the release that she is forming a search committee to recommend a new executive director to the association’s board of governors.
As the bar’s chief executive officer, Platt is in effect now acting as the association’s executive director.
Tarasiewicz joined the bar association in 1995 as its senior public relations associate. He served in that position until he became the director of new media and publications in 2001. In 2006, he became the director of communications, and he served as associate executive director from 2009 until the end of 2013.
When he took over in 2014, Tarasiewicz succeeded long-time executive director Kenneth Shear, who served in the position for 37 years.
In an interview with The Legal before taking over as executive director, Tarasiewicz said he planned to increase membership of young attorneys and seek to maintain the association’s prosperity in a difficult economic climate. A method to help ensure that prosperity, Tarasiewicz had said, was through forging partnerships with like-minded groups.
“We have a partnership with the Philadelphia Association of Paralegals, where people who join one [group] get a slight discount to the other,” Tarasiewicz said. “We have a natural synergy with them, and it’s a formula that breeds success for both organizations.”
At the time, Tarasiewicz also mentioned he would continue to support the association’s efforts to promote diversity and inclusion within the ranks of the legal profession.
The association’s press release also noted that last year Tarasiewicz won the Pennsylvania Bar Association Conference of County Bar Leaders Arthur J. Birdsall Award.
Tarasiewicz had also served as senior communications manager for Dechert and is a past president and chairman of the Philadelphia Public Relations Association. He was also inducted into the Philadelphia Public Relations Hall of Fame in 2012 and is a three-time recipient of the National Association of Bar Executives Luminary Award, as well as the Philadelphia Public Relations Association Fast Track Award.
