Michael K. Hurst has been elected president of the Dallas Bar Association. Hurst is a litigator and partner in Lynn Pinker Cox & Hurst. He handles large and complex commercial, intellectual property and employment litigation. Other 2018 officers for DBA and their firms or companies are president-elect Laura Benitez Geisler, Geisler Law Firm; first vice president Robert Tobey, Johnston Tobey Baruch; second vice president Aaron Tobin, Condon Tobin Sladek Thornton; secretary-treasurer Vicki Blanton, AT&T; and immediate past president Rob Crain, Crain Lewis Brogdon.

New Positions

Three Texas attorneys are among 15 new partners named recently by Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld. Matthew D. Bivona and Jason M. Daniel are new partners in the firm’s Dallas office. Bivona is in the corporate and securities law practice, and McDaniel is in the investment management practice. Brian Glenn Patterson is a new partner in the Houston office, where he is in the labor and employment practice.

Stephen B. Crain has been elected to a three-year term on Bracewell’s management committee. He is a partner in the firm’s Houston office and has served as chairman of its litigation section since 2014.

Taylor Williams has been named a partner in Gonzalez, Chiscano, Angulo & Kasson in San Antonio. Williams focuses his practice on probate, construction and general commercial litigation.

Lauren M. Kulpa is one of 28 attorneys promoted to counsel for Perkins Coie. Based in the firm’s Dallas office, Kulpa is in the firm’s labor and employment practice and has experience in litigating single plaintiff, class action and collective action matters in federal courts as well as in Texas and California state courts.

New partners at Jones Day include Samir Kaushik and Andrew R. Van Noord in the Dallas office and H. Albert Liou in Houston. Kaushik’s practice focuses on securities litigation and U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission enforcement matters. Van Noord focuses his practice on all facets of commercial real estate and general business transactions. Liou is in the firm’s Houston office, where he has an intellectual property practice.

Manny Gardberg has joined Thompson & Knight in Houston as an associate in the firm’s real estate and banking practice group. His practice focuses on commercial real estate transactions.
