The State Bar of Texas sunset bill has cleared its final legislative hurdle with a provision still attached that is meant to protect the free exercise of religion for those seeking admission to the bar.

S.B. 302, which has been sent to Gov. Greg Abbott for signing into law, requires the Texas Supreme Court to ensure that no rule governing admission to the practice of law violates the state’s Civil Practice and Remedies Code. Under that provision, government may not substantially burden a person’s free exercise of religion without showing a compelling governmental reason for doing so.
