A group of Latino voters filed a lawsuit Wednesday challenging the way Texas selects judges to the Supreme Court and the Court of Criminal Appeals by filing a federal lawsuit against the state in an effort to force single member district elections for the high courts.

The Supreme Court of Texas and the Court of Criminal Appeals are the final authority on civil and criminal law in the state and comprised of nine judges each who are elected to six-year terms through staggered, at-large statewide elections.
