Whistleblower LawsGovernment whistleblower programs and related statutory initiatives have been remarkably successful at identifying unlawful conduct and returning money to taxpayers and other victims. For example, the Securities and Exchange Commission recently announced awards under its program to two whistleblowers totaling $98 million, likely just a fraction of what the Commission recovered for fraud victims. Additionally, two whistleblowers in a federal False Claims Act case (Penelow v. Janssen Products) recently secured a jury verdict for which the final judgment could eclipse $1.7 billion after mandatory trebling and statutory penalties.
