The U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee heard from two federal appeals court nominees Wednesday morning, but a nominee from Texas for the Fifth Circuit notably dodged some of the usual fastballs lobbed by conservatives toward President Joe Biden’s picks.

U.S. Magistrate Judge Irma Carrillo Ramirez of the Northern District of Texas was selected by Biden—with help from both Republican Texas Sens. Ted Cruz and John Cornyn—to be the president’s second nominee for the Louisiana-based appeals court. Ramirez has been in the magistrate post since 2002 and previously served as U.S. attorney in the Northern District of Texas. She worked for Locke Purnell Rain Harrell before entering public service.
