A Rabun County jury awarded a total $140 million to the parents and family of a 7-year-old boy swept overboard and drowned while boating on Lake Burton in 2014, deciding that the boat’s manufacturer had failed to warn its passengers that the low, open bow was known to be a swamping hazard.

The award included $120 million in punitive damages, which are not capped at Georgia’s $250,000 limit for such damages because the case involved product liability claims.
