Board members of the State Bar of Texas asked for more time from the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit to file to reconsider a ruling that said it was unconstitutional and violated lawyers’ freedoms of speech and association to force them to pay dues for certain political and ideological bar activities.

The Fifth Circuit on Thursday granted the bar’s motion for more time to ask the three-judge panel that decided the case to rehear the dispute, or to ask the entire appellate court to take it up again. Although the bar moved for a deadline extension to Aug. 16, the court ruled it would have to file for rehearing by July 23.
