On the first day of trial in a life insurance dispute, plaintiffs lawyer John Black’s trial strategy led him to call one of the other side’s witnesses.

Black said that the testimony of this witness, an insurance underwriter for defendant United Mutual of Omaha Insurance Co., was really the reason why his client won a $113.85 million verdict—$100 million was punitive damages—during a jury trial from June 7 to 11 in Jefferson County’s 60th District Court in Beaumont.
