As Texas Supreme Court Justice Eva Guzman’s retirement date approaches Friday, appellate litigators in Texas are remembering Guzman as a fierce questioner in oral arguments and a great behind-the-scenes mentor to young female attorneys.

In a letter Monday to Gov. Greg Abbott, Guzman announced her upcoming resignation, without providing a reason for stepping down. Abbott will now likely move to find someone to fill Guzman’s seat through the rest of the judge’s term, which is set to end Dec. 31, 2022.
