Austin’s Third Court of Appeals will get a new chief justice as Central Texas voters handed Democratic challenger Darlene Byrne a victory in her attempt to unseat incumbent chief Jeff Rose.

Two other judges in the Austin area were unseated by Democrats: 460th District Judge Geoffrey Puryear of Austin lost his race, as did Judge David Junkin of Hays County’s 453rd District Court.
