The past few years haven’t been the kindest for tech services with “made in Russia” stamped on them. From Russian hackers meddling in a U.S. presidential election to concerns over antivirus programs doubling as Russian spyware, some Russian tech products don’t currently have the best reputation in the United States.

The apprehension toward Russian tech was further highlighted in a letter from the FBI to U.S. Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-New York, regarding selfie-altering app FaceApp. While the November letter didn’t say the Russia-based app was a counterintelligence threat, it noted it had the potential to be one “based on the data the product collects, its privacy and terms of use policies, and the legal mechanisms available to the government of Russia that permit access to data within Russia’s borders.”
