For U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor, retirement is almost certainly years or decades off. But the 60-year-old justice is already thinking about it, and she said recently she’d like to preside over trials again when she retires.

During her Oct. 25 Yale Law School conversation with fellow Yale alumni Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito Jr, Sotomayor said that during lunch with Chief Justice John Roberts Jr. and Justice Elena Kagan last year, the conversation turned to the justices—including Sandra Day O’Connor and David Souter—who have sat on federal appeals courts by designation since leaving the Supreme Court.
