Welcome to Supreme Court Brief, your go-to column on the day’s high court news. My name is Jimmy Hoover. I began covering the court for the National Law Journal in April 2023.

Tuesday’s arguments at the Supreme Court garnered little of the attention of Monday’s marathon hearings on the fate of new social media laws, and almost certainly less than will Wednesday’s show-down over a federal bump stock ban. But the second hearing of the day, a dispute about whether federal law preempts state laws requiring banks to pay interest on mortgage escrow accounts, nevertheless served up an intriguing listen for court-watchers.
