The U.S. Department of Justice, following through on a threat it made to a federal appellate court, on Monday asked the U.S. Supreme Court to block a nationwide injunction against the Trump administration’s restrictions on funds for so-called sanctuary cities.

The Justice Department asked the justices to stay a district court injunction pending proceedings before the full U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit in the case Chicago v. Sessions. The government last week, in a letter to the Seventh Circuit, warned that it would turn to the Supreme Court if the appellate court did not act on its request to freeze the injunction by June 18.
