Paul McCartney has settled his legal battle with Sony/ATV over the rights to the songs he wrote while he was a member of the Beatles, and in the process struck a blow for artists’ rights.

“The parties have resolved this matter by entering into a confidential settlement agreement and jointly request that the Court enter the enclosed proposed order dismissing the above-referenced action without prejudice,” McCartney’s attorney, Michael A. Jacobs of Morrison & Foerster in San Francisco, wrote in a letter to U.S. District Judge Edgardo Ramos of the Southern District of New York on Thursday.
