A federal judge has swatted down an effort to dismiss an emoluments lawsuit against President Donald Trump that’s been brought by the attorneys general in Washington, D.C., and Maryland.

U.S. District Judge Peter Messitte of the District of Maryland denied a motion to dismiss the lawsuit Wednesday, rejecting the government’s narrow reading of the term “emoluments” in the Constitution’s foreign and domestic emoluments clauses. The lawsuit claims the president has violated those two anti-corruption clauses by accepting gifts and payments through his vast business empire.
