Discussing ideas Millennials working. shironosov/iStockphoto.com.

Millennials in the workplace face a host of stereotypes. They are described as being overly sensitive, unused to hard work, technology-obsessed, and consumed with their own uniqueness. True or not, these stereotypes have created a fair amount of speculation about how millennial attorneys, who now make up a full 20 percent of all lawyers in the U.S., could potentially reshape the legal industry in their own image.

In Big Law, however, younger attorneys seem to have fit right into the pre-existing mold. Although just 2 percent of Big Law partners fall into the millennial bracket, many more millennials work as law firm associates, and work hard. Associates worked an average of 2,208 hours in 2010 at the largest firms, according to a 2012 study from the National Association for Law Placement, the agency’s most recent report. The American Lawyer senior columnist Vivia Chen wrote that millennials are “a perfect brew of narcissism and paranoia that should make them ideal associates.”
