Tony West’s first official day as chief legal officer at Uber Technologies Inc. began by calling regulators to say: “Hi, it’s Tony. It’s my first day. By the way, I have to tell you about a data breach.”

In his first one-on-one interview since joining the San Francisco-based ride-hailing company in late November, West shares how the days that followed have been just as “eventful” as his first, during which he hit the ground running by dealing with a previously undisclosed breach of Uber’s networks.
