Arnold & Porter has a storied past, including luminaries such as founding partner Abe Fortas (who joined the Supreme Court), current high court nominee Merrick Garland, and a legion of other high-profile public figures. The firm famously defended victims of Joseph McCarthy’s anti-communist persecutions during the 1950s, and perhaps most famously, it prevailed in the landmark case of Gideon v. Wainwright, establishing the right to counsel for indigent defendants.

Today, the firm is known for its trial, corporate, and antitrust work, as well as its relatively congenial atmosphere and outsize commitment to pro bono matters. It has garnered multiple spots on the “100 Best Places to Work” from both Working Mother Magazine and Fortune.
