Over the past five years, law firms have embraced the onshore shared service center as a method to significantly reduce cost and improve efficiency. These centers, which are typically based in low cost markets in the US and the UK, offer firms the ability to reduce labor costs by as much as 30% and real estate costs by as much as 40%. ALM Intelligence estimates that, for most Am Law 100 firms, these savings can add up to $5 million to $20 million dollars per year, depending on the firm’s size and the range of services migrated to the onshore center.

The Report, Shared Service Centers Reshaping the Legal Marketplace and Saving Money, aims to assist firm leaders in developing a business case for a robust shared service strategy that combines back office functions and legal services. The report reviews the range of services that US and UK firms are currently conducting in shared service centers and evaluates the potential savings that law firms can capture through the establishment of onshore centers.
