Cravath set off a landslide by raising starting associate salaries to $180,000. Nearly all of the Am Law 50 firms and over half of the Am Law 51-100 firms soon followed. If the increase aligns with precedent, as in the last rounds of associate salary raises in 2000 and 2006, more firms will follow suit if they want to continue luring top associate talent.

However, while Cravath may have started this shake-up, corporate counsel will have the final say in where the dust settles.
