The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, finding abuse of discretion by Western District of Texas Judge Alan Albright, reversed a $2.1 billion verdict and ordered a new trial in VLSI Technology LLC v. Intel Corp. Intel, represented by a Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr legal team comprised of attorneys in Boston, Wash., D.C. and Denver, was able to convince a Federal Circuit panel that one of two challenged patent infringement claims was insufficiently presented. Counsel for VLSI includes Jeffrey Lamken of the MoloLamken firm, Wash., D.C. and a legal team with Irell & Manella in Los Angeles, California. Lamken did not immediately respond to a request for comment. In addition to vacating the damages award, the circuit court agreed that Judge Albright abused his discretion when he denied Intel its license defense.
