The Chicago Teachers Union and its top officers were hit with a class action on Feb. 16 in Illinois Circuit Court for Cook County over a five-day strike in Jan. 2022. The suit, brought by Hughes & Suhr on behalf of parents and students, contends that the strike violated state laws and the defendant's collective bargaining agreement with the Chicago Board of Education. The complaint further alleges that the student class missed $213.4 million worth of learning time due to the strike, which arose from COVID-19 safety measures in public schools. Counsel have not yet appeared for the defendants. The case is 2024L001773, Kessem v. Chicago Teachers Union.
