An attorney's improper communication with an opposing party may lead to sanctions, but does not necessarily reverse a summary judgment, a Harris County appellate court ruled. Steven Bien Tran, a Houston attorney at Bush & Ramirez who also owns several restaurants, became the target of a sanctions motion following settlement negotiations related to a breach of contract suit. Mai N. Lam and associates, collectively referred to as the Mai parties, are owners of several restaurant and bar hospitality venues. They contacted Tran about purchasing Chapman & Kirby, an event center and gastro lounge in Houston's edgy East Village that Tran controlled through EADO Enterprises Group LLC. The Mai parties contracted to buy Chapman & Kirby but the deal fell through and EADO sued the Mai parties and other purchasers for breach of contract, fraud, intentional misrepresentation, theft, and conversion.
