Given the opportunities to make life-long institutional clients out of emerging companies in North Carolina's capital city, Big Law's presence in Raleigh—home to a university-fueled start-up culture and ample transactions to advise—has been underwhelming. Judging by the number of boots on the ground, Big Law isn't big in Raleigh. Locally headquartered midsize firms like Smith Anderson and Wyrick Robbins, with 310 and 101 lawyers respectively, far outnumber the headcount in the local offices of Am Law 50 firms, many of which have one of their smallest offices in the region.
