When McCarter & English launched its Pro Bono Fellowship for the City of Newark in mid-2018, it was firm pro bono partner Michelle Movahed who successfully pushed the firm to hire a full-time pro bono fellow to represent tenants in the firm’s home city.

And in 2019, the firm hired Abdul-Rehman Khan, who works with Movahed, leading the program to take on “a ton of cases,” in addition to hosting workshops, working on policy, and doing other important work to help address the many thousands of tenancy cases arising in the city each year, involving predominantly unrepresented litigants.
