African-American attorneys are sparsely represented in the New Jersey Office of the Attorney General and have little representation in leadership positions, three deputy attorneys general have said in their discrimination suit.
The suit, which was filed in Essex County Superior Court on May 10 and served on state officials Monday, says the Attorney General’s Office engages in a continuing pattern of disparate treatment and discrimination against the plaintiffs based on race by paying them less and denying them promotions and other opportunities. In addition, the creation of a Diversity Council at the Attorney General’s Office in 2013 has been a hollow gesture, as recommendations by its members for addressing disparities were ignored by management and the discrimination continued unabated, the suit claims.
