Lawyers and municipalities are watching the Trump administration to see how strictly it applies a law that’s increasingly been used to investigate allegations of religious discrimination targeting the construction of new mosques.

The U.S. Department of Justice has played a major role in enforcing the Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act since its enactment in 2000, but some lawyers are contemplating what would happen if the government takes a lesser role in carrying out the act’s provisions due to a change in White House leadership. The federal law was often used by the Obama administration to investigate whether municipalities illegally blocked construction of mosques.
