Gov. Chris Christie on Monday signed legislation requiring out-of-state law enforcement agencies to report to New Jersey authorities on investigations being conducted within the state's borders.

The measure, A-2948, was sparked by revelations last year that a special unit of the New York City Police Department had conducted surveillance on Muslim houses of worship and businesses in Newark since the mid-2000s without notifying New Jersey law enforcement. New Jersey politicians at all levels protested the actions, but Attorney General Jeffrey Chiesa concluded no state laws had been broken.
