When Pete Townshend wrote "Goin’ Mobile," first produced by The Who on their 1971 album Who’s Next, little did he realize the tune would portend how lawyers, even those "Over 50," would receive their news and information.
In the last year, traffic to ALM digital properties from mobile devices has increased nearly 60 percent, far outpacing the growth in desktops and laptops, according to the legal content and software provider’s website statistics. (ALM, a provider of news and business information to the legal and real estate industries, is the New Jersey Law Journal‘s parent company.) This trend has been especially profound for tablet owners who just two years ago made up less than one percent of all traffic and today are now five-fold that number.
In general, lawyers have chosen iOS devices as their preference, with nearly 80 percent of ALM visitors using a product manufactured by Apple Inc. Even more dramatically, when it comes to using tablets to read legal news, Apple holds a 98 percent share of the legal market, according to the 2012 Am Law Tech Survey.
Fifty-five percent of ALM’s mobile traffic is from small law firms (under 50 employees), with 33 percent of the mobile traffic from large law firms. Litigators, who are often out of the office, make up the largest percentage of mobile readers on ALM’s websites, representing more than 45 percent of unique visitors.
Recognizing the import of "goin’ mobile" for lawyers, ALM is adopting mobile as a preferred means to keep readers up to date with current legal happenings. The legal content and software provider has launched mobile and tablet optimized versions of all of its award-winning websites, including Law Technology News.
The new mobile sites put the latest breaking news from ALM’s national and regional publications in the palm of your hand. Litigators, corporate counsel and business lawyers can now access their favorite publications on their way to and from work, or in the courthouse, with fast-loading, easy-to-navigate sites. The sites are optimized for tablets and smartphones, including iPhones, Samsung Galaxy, Kindle Fire, iPads and BlackBerry devices.
The interface for the ALM mobile sites is simple and fast. A "Front Page" lists headline links to the relevant publication’s latest breaking news. The menu is generally hidden on all of ALM’s mobile sites to allow for more content on the page and easier reading. Click on the bars next to the publication’s logo to display the index to access other essential information, including decisions, most viewed articles, and the vast quantity of published articles sorted by practice area or topic.
The mobile sites also provide quick access to the latest employment opportunities through LawJobs.com, and in Florida, Georgia, Pennsylvania (Philadelphia) and New York, access to public notices.
ALM has also integrated social media throughout the optimized site, giving readers the ability to share their articles via Facebook, LinkedIn, Google Plus or email right from their mobile device. To make it easier to find and read the next article, at the bottom of each article page, users will find simple navigation alerting them to and identifying both the previous and next important articles they should read.
Although designed for mobile devices such as tablets and smartphones, the new interface works slick on desktop computers, too.
