In this issue, we feature 50 lawyers we think are emblematic of the next wave of leadership of the New Jersey bar, based on their achievements so far in their careers. In past years, we profiled groups of 40 promising lawyers under age 40. We expanded the field to 50 this year because, well, New Jersey has the talent.
As usual, our criteria for selection of these rising stars are that they have developed practice niches, amassed strong books of business, demonstrated leadership qualities, shown expertise in litigation or transactional work and committed themselves to pro bono, charitable and professional volunteer work. All of these factors tend to make an individual stand out among his or her peers.
No two of the 50 were selected for identical reasons. They have distinguishable qualities and have structured their careers differently, yet each stands out in some way, however nuanced, and we believe each is deserving of this distinction.
We did not give preference to partners at larger firms, but they are well-represented, because by making partner before age 40, they have demonstrated to their firms much the same qualities that we also focus on. Neither did we consider characteristics like gender and ethnicity, yet the diversity of the group is apparent.
From our standpoint as observers of the New Jersey legal profession, these young lawyers are well worth watching.

Nicholas D. Bliablias

Profile: A second generation lawyer — the son of renowned criminal defense lawyer Dino Bliablias — he is credited by his firm as client-centric with strong communication and interpersonal skills that help him project sincerity and confidence. Bliablias concentrates his practice in the area of civil litigation, with an emphasis on representing public and private sector entities in connection with labor and employment litigation and transactional matters. At his prior firm, Bliablias worked on jury trials before the New Jersey Superior Court, Law and Appellate Divisions. He also had experience in arbitration before the NASD. In firm management, he assists in the oversight of five associates and also spearheads the firm’s summer associates program. This summer the firm hired three associates who are currently working with attorneys in different practice groups under his direction. In his practice, he represents private and public sector employees, including schools and school districts such as the East Orange Board of Education, in litigation and general legal services. He conducts training and provides counsel on employment matters. He conducts seminars on employment law issues, such as social media in the workplace, best practices for small businesses and antidiscrimination laws. He is also a published author in this field, whose writings include a guide to New Jersey contract law, published by the Institute of Continuing Legal Education.

Profile: Borrelli has first-chaired 15 binding securities arbitrations and trials (and second-chaired a number of other trials and arbitrations) and has consistently obtained positive results for the clients. According to his firm, this has given him the perspective and judgment that clients value and the experience to train and mentor the firm’s associates. He has developed particular expertise in representing financial institutions with respect to claims unique to the securities industry. He has litigated hundreds of matters involving banking, regulatory and sales practice issues. Given the fallout from the 2008 credit crisis and the uncertainty of the current economic climate, Borrelli’s experience with these issues has been invaluable to the firm and its clients. His clientele includes UBS Financial Services Inc. of Weehawken and related corporate entities, including UBS AG, UBS Bank USA, UBS Securities, UBS Investment Bank, UBS International Morgan Stanley. As a partner, he has supervisory responsibility for counsel, associates and paralegals in handling of commercial litigation and securities arbitration matters. He has served on the firm’s Green Committee since its inception in January 2008 and is involved in a number of initiatives to reduce energy consumption and to enhance conservation and recycling efforts. He has been on the firm’s Recruiting Committee since 2000 and has conducted several on-campus-interview and recruiting programs at Fordham Law School and numerous in-office interviews for summer associate and associate positions at the firm. He has served as a mentor to a number of the firm’s summer associates and first-year associates. Profile: Bulbulia left Bingham McCutcheon in 2005 to come to New Jersey and start a trusts and estates practice at Skoloff & Wolfe. In a matter of months, he was originating significant amounts of work for himself and his colleagues. After just six years in New Jersey, he has a book of business that according to his firm should pass the $1 million mark in annual revenue this year. He prides himself on doing first rate legal work at an affordable price. He demystifies sophisticated estate and gift tax laws and strategies for clients and is often able to defuse volatile situations among family members and avoid litigation for families. At the age of 34, he joined Skoloff & Wolfe as a non-equity partner and grew a trusts and estates practice from the ground up, ultimately generating annual revenue of over $300,000 in each of his years at that firm. At his present firm, he is currently involved in over one hundred active matters, ranging from the preparation of simple wills, up through the administration of multimillion-dollar estates. Bulbulia is also actively involved in numerous high stakes estate litigation matters. He is an equity partner who directly oversees an associate and a paralegal. He takes an active role in firm management decisions, such as hiring and firing of attorneys and staff, determination of compensation of attorneys and staff and generally determining the continuing growth of the firm.

In her firm’s view, this relationship with our clients sets Cassata apart from her contemporaries in the insurance-defense field. Her clients include Allstate New Jersey Insurance Co. (defense litigation / defense PIP litigation), State Farm (indemnity insurance defense PIP litigation), New Jersey Manufacturers Insurance Co. Feliciano, an interlocutory appeal from the Special Civil Part, Passaic County, in which the Appellate Division held that the defendants/appellants were entitled to relaxation of court rules to expand discovery in a personal injury suit, including interrogatories and deposition of the plaintiff. Profile: Castner enjoys a statewide reputation as a problem-solver with deep bipartisan relationships. He has been one of Trenton’s most prominent, widely respected figures for well over a decade. His long record of public service for New Jersey includes such prominent roles as chief counsel to the governor, member of the State Commission of Investigation (SCI), chief counsel to Democratic members of the Apportionment Commission, chief counsel to the Redistricting Commission, general counsel to the General Assembly, executive director of the General Assembly Majority Office (then the youngest director in its history), staff attorney for the Fair Share Housing Center, staff member of the Legislature’s nonpartisan Office of Legislative Services and chief counsel to the New Jersey State Democratic Party’s efforts to win legislative redistricting in 2011. As chief counsel to Gov. Jon Corzine, he helped reduce number of statewide judicial vacancies to 19. He also assisted in Associate Justice Barry Albin’s successful renomination and confirmation by the state Senate in 2009. As executive director of the General Assembly, he helped oversee New Jersey’s special session on property taxes in 2006. As general counsel of General Assembly, he helped draft New Jersey’s landmark 25-point ethics and campaign finance overhaul in 2004. Castner most recently played a critical role in the passage of New Jersey’s higher education restructuring legislation and legislation reforming tenure for public school teachers.

Already he is single-handedly handling all of the intellectual property needs of several of the firms’ largest clients and has put Mandelbaum Salsburg on the map of reputable intellectual property practice groups in the state. He has filed and/or prosecuted over 100  patent applications successfully to obtain exclusive protection for clients’ products and methods in a variety of technological fields. He also focuses on creating cost-effective growth strategies to preserve technology for start-up businesses.  He serves as chair of the Intellectual Property Practice Group and as a member of the Technology Committee. His clients include Tumi, Inc., of South Plainfield (patent portfolio management), High 5 Games, of Mahwah (corporate intellectual property counsel), OFS Fitel LLC of Norcross, Ga. Profile: Although her current practice focuses on environmental litigation, investigations, and counseling, Feingold is accomplished in many practice areas, including electronic discovery, privilege, and government investigations. In her firm’s view, what distinguishes her is her broad range of experience and her strength in all of her practice areas. While still an associate, Feingold drafted, argued, and won a landmark electronic discovery issue in the District of New Jersey. In her practice, she looks beyond just understanding the client’s immediate legal issues, and takes into account the client’s business as a whole, and how legal decisions made in the short term may affect the client down the road, thus providing proactive, preventative counseling that saves clients money in the long term. She is committed to the development of young associates; she mentors two associates, and currently serves as co-chair of the firm’s litigation training committee. She is credited with always taking time to provide feedback to the junior attorneys with whom she works, to make sure that they are learning and not just blindly doing. Profile: In the eight years that Fraser has been an attorney with Laddey, Clark & Ryan, she has proved herself as an outstanding community leader and trial attorney. Serving on a trial team, Fraser has carefully honed her trial presentation skills over the last eight years having participated in approximately 15 Superior Court trials and hundreds of municipal court trials. She has helped obtain some of the largest personal injury jury verdicts in Sussex County, according to her firm, and has received positive verdicts in all but two personal injury trials. She is also credited with constantly trying to improve the public’s overall impression of attorneys through thoughtful presentation at trial and creative community service initiatives. One way she furthers this goal is by instructing continuing education courses in New Jersey as well as nationally, most recently in Atlanta, Ga. Profile: To his firm, Gaeckle’s work on the development of the Green Building practice group was prescient. When he started the group years ago, Green Building issues were barely on the legal radar, but Gaeckle saw the coming wave of legal issues and started the research. Such early recognition of potential business is usually the province of partners, but it was  Gaeckle who came to the partners with the idea of starting the practice area. It took some convincing but the partnership finally approved the venture, which involved substantial time and effort on Gaeckle’s part, above and beyond his billable-hour demands. Gaeckle is credited with a keen understanding of the practical, business part of law practice while excelling at the technical aspects of representation. He has been the Green Building Practice Group team leader since November 2008. Other management roles include service on the Associate/Partner Liaison Steering Committee (since February 2007) and the  Associate Mentoring Program (since January 2007).  Among is clients is the American Institute of Architects, New Jersey, which he assists with general counsel services, preparation of administrative rulemaking petitions and oppositions to proposed administrative rulemaking, interaction with State Board of Architect and Division of Law and Public Safety. He also represents the New Jersey Society of Professional Engineers, assisting with general counsel services, preparation of administrative rulemaking petitions and oppositions to proposed administrative rulemaking, interaction with State Board of Professional Engineers and Division of Law and Public Safety. Jeffrey M. Gradone

Profile: Archer & Greiner says Gradone’s efforts have resulted in significant reductions in the tax burden on hundreds of companies, helping them increase profitability in a state known for its heavy taxation and resulting migration of commercial enterprises to other states. Gradone is a leading state and local tax attorney, a former New Jersey Tax Court law clerk, an experienced negotiator and litigator, a member of the state Supreme Court Committee to the Tax Court, the secretary to the Tax Section of the New Jersey State Bar Association, co-chair of the Property Tax Committee of the Tax Section of NJSBA, a frequent lecturer in CLE programs for lawyers, appraisers, and tax assessors, a member of the Council of Princeton Future, the treasurer of the Princeton Athletic Club, a member of the legislative committee of the National Association of Industrial and Office Properties-New Jersey and the 2011 recipient of the NJSBA Legislative Service Award. He is an integral member of Archer’s Real Estate Tax Appeal Practice Group, one of the firm’s best-performing segments and among the most dynamic and successful of such practices in the state, the firm says.  As one of two partners in the Group directing associates and counsel, as well as performing complex legal analysis and advocacy himself, Gradone has helped build the firm’s business in this area to previously unattained, unimagined levels of success.

Profile: Griffin is a 2009 law graduate, but the leadership role she plays in litigation matters, the firm’s business culture, and the legal community is that of a seasoned attorney. Within the firm, Griffin is the chair of the Diversity Committee and an active participate in the Women At Scarinci Hollenbeck Committee. She is a key leader in the firm’s new social media marketing, frequently authoring blogs on a variety of legal issues. Moreover, Griffin is frequently tapped to write appellate briefs and has one published Supreme Court decision and another pending. Ms. Griffin is active in the New Jersey State Bar Association, serving as the secretary of the GLBT Rights Section (and set to be chair in 2015). She worked on behalf of the NJSBA to draft an amicus brief in defense of the state’s Anti-Bullying School Law. She also serves as an advisor to the Essex County Executive through her participation on the Essex County LGBTQ Advisory Board. As chair of the firm’s 10-member Diversity Committee, devoted to promoting diversity awareness within the firm, she drafts policies on issues relating to diversity, such as transgender restroom policies, flex-time policies;  attends diversity events on the firm’s behalf and assists in solicitation of new clients. Profile: Haber is responsible for management and oversight of JPMorgan Chase Bank’s national network of law firms providing foreclosure/bankruptcy services on its behalf in 54 states/territories, including but not limited to: retention and termination of firms, referral volume decisions, training and development on Chase procedures and mass network communications. Before joining Chase, he started a mortgage banking litigation practice at McElroy, Deutsch, Mulvaney & Carpenter, a full service law firm that did not previously have such a practice. He has originated and handled a variety of matters for several national mortgage servicers, including contested foreclosure matters transferred from volume foreclosure firms and defensive litigation in New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania. After approximately 5 months at Chase, was promoted to lead attorney of the Default Attorney Management Team, which is responsible for retaining and terminating law firms, referral volume decisions and numerous other functions involved in managing a national attorney network of approximately 200 law firms.  He manages a staff of 17 lawyers and nonlawyers located in New Jersey, Florida and Ohio. He organized and served as emcee for a three-day Default Attorney Summit in Dallas, Texas, April 2012, which was attended by over 400 network attorneys and Chase employees.  He has been responsible for the implementation (both internally and through network law firms) of numerous provisions in the OCC and DOJ/AG consent orders. Last year, he was the senior attorney on a newly formed Attorney Oversight Team of eight lawyers, responsible for ensuring the quality of legal work performed by national foreclosure/bankruptcy law firm network through audits, file reviews and on-site visits.
John E. Hogan

The agreement was extensive and a significant victory for inmates at a jail notorious for its conditions and overcrowding. Numerous cooperating attorneys were involved and, as with numerous cases in which the ACLU-NJ takes part, LoCicero was in charge of overall supervision and management of the case as well as taking an extensive direct role therein. LoCicero supervises dozens of ACLU-NJ cases, serving as lead counsel in a number of them. She is also a leader in the civil rights community generally, working with other organizations and providing legal education, such as recently developing and instituting a legal training on the rights of persons in encounters with police. In firm management, he is the leader of the entire litigation practice, including handling cases from inception through verdict.  His notable clients include Vincent Young, leader of a set of the Bloods Street gang, charged with offenses under the Racketeer Influenced Corrupt Organizations Act; Panico Salons, as general counsel for all legal matters;  and Wholesale Lighting Services Inc., as general counsel for all legal matters. Profile: Walsh has taken increasingly significant responsibilities in the Business Law Section of the New Jersey State Bar Association. He created a national service project and was at the forefront of issues facing the profession, including serving as the lead presenter of the Truth In Law School Education Resolution.
