The New Jersey Legislature unanimously passed a bill Thursday that would temporarily allow public bodies to publish public notices in news outlets in a digital-only format.

If Gov. Phil Murphy signs the measure into law, it will relieve local governments from the looming public notice crisis. Since The Star-Ledger announced in October that it would print its last physical copy on Feb. 2, attorneys representing public entities and advising municipalities have been clamoring for a solution. The bill passed the Senate quickly in a 36-0 vote and without commentary from the assembled body.
