At oral arguments before the U.S. Supreme Court on Wednesday in the matter of New York v. New Jersey, the justices questioned counsel for New York on whether New Jersey could be held to the 1953 Waterfront Commission Compact indefinitely.

The 70-year-old compact created the commission to “combat corruption, crime, and undesirable labor practices” in the Port of New York, according to the brief. In 2018, New Jersey enacted a statute, Chapter 324, to withdraw from the compact and abolish the commission.
