Some lawyers representing LGBTQ+ clients say they received anxious phone calls over the Supreme Court ruling overturning Roe v. Wade.

Their clients’ anxiety was prompted by the court’s ruling in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, and particularly a concurring opinion by Justice Clarence Thomas suggesting that the court should reconsider past decisions granting access to contraceptives, the right to engage in consensual same-sex relations and same-sex marriage. Even in gay-friendly New Jersey, which codified the right to same-sex marriage in anticipation of a decision overturning Roe, the decision was met with concern.
