States’ attorneys general on Wednesday announced a nationwide $141 million agreement with Intuit over what they called deceptive marketing practices surrounding “free” TurboTax programs.

In a statement Wednesday, Acting Attorney General Matthew Platkin said a multistate investigation led to the settlement with Intuit, which agreed to provide restitution to nearly 4.4 million consumers who started using TurboTax’s free edition for tax years 2016 through 2018 and were told that they had to pay to file even though they were eligible to use an Internal Revenue Service free-file program through TurboTax.
