The family of a man who died when his vehicle was crushed by an out-of-control dump truck on I-78 had a $1.125 million settlement approved on Sept. 27 in their Essex County case, Estate of Desmond v. Lighthouse Trucking.

According to counsel and court documents, on July 19, 2018, Donald Desmond, 53, was driving west on I-78 in Berkeley Heights when a dump truck driving in the right lane of the eastbound side, owned by Lighthouse Trucking and driven by Manuel Corriea, veered across and over the concrete barrier into the westbound lanes, striking Desmond’s sedan. Desmond’s vehicle, which was crushed and trapped under the dump truck, subsequently was struck by two other motorists: Esther Onyeanisi and James Whiteman.
