The estate of a woman who died after a recurrence of cancer following surgery was paid a $1 million settlement on Nov. 27 in a Bergen County suit claiming that her oncologist botched the procedure, Estate of Ciesla v. McCain.

According to the suit, Maryann Ciesla underwent surgery in 2012 after she was diagnosed with colon cancer. The doctor, Donald McCain, discovered during the operation that the tumor was large and extended over a wide area, so he divided the tumor into two parts and removed it. He also performed a hysterectomy, and removed her ovaries and fallopian tubes.
