Above the Law, the blog that launched in 2006, has served as a font of cynicism about the legal profession from its inception. But founder David Lat has this to say about the current state of Big Law life: It’s gotten better.

In this week’s Legal Speak, we hear from Lat, who left the editor-in-chief post at the irreverent blog in May to become managing director at Lateral Link, a legal recruiting firm.

Lat says that working in Big Law, for many reasons—including pressure from millennials and changes in the kinds of associate work—is an improved experience compared with 13 years ago, when Above the Law made its debut.

He also talks about the mistakes firms make when bringing aboard laterals and what they’re doing right. In addition, he shares his insight on how legal journalism has evolved over the years.
