Former New Jersey Gov. James Florio shared highlights from his autobiography, “Standing on Principle,” on Dec. 21 at a New Jersey State Bar Association breakfast at the New Jersey Law Center in New Brunswick. Angelo J. Genova, managing partner of Genova Burns, moderated a Q&A session with Florio, according to a firm announcement. Florio spoke candidly about his upbringing, family life, and journey into politics, and the modern-day impact of his achievements while in office, including the assault weapons ban enacted in 1990 and the 1980s-era Superfund laws, the firm said. Florio also reflected on the challenges and rewards of his political career and how his commitment to standing on principle helped him navigate from being elected to Congress to becoming governor, the firm said. Florio said of the book, published in spring 2018: “It’s not going to be a best-seller, but the people who have seen it in New Jersey have enjoyed it. It’s very satisfying.” Genova served as legal counsel to Florio, a Democrat, during the 1981 recount in the race against Republican Tom Kean, and Florio and Genova have remained longtime friends. “The title of this book, ‘Standing on Principle’ is very much about this man. And what we heard from him today reinforces that he was a great governor in his time, and quite frankly, would be a great governor today,” Genova said in a statement.
