MINEOLA — The family of a Hofstra University student killed by police while being used as a human shield in a 2013 shooting has settled lawsuits for $4.5 million.

The Nassau County Legislature on Monday voted to approve the payouts to the family of Andrea Rebello. The 21-year-old from Tarrytown was fatally shot by a police officer during a botched off-campus home invasion. The gunman, who also was killed, had the woman in a headlock.
