Eastern District Judge Nicholas A. Garaufis, the center of a controversy over purported prosecutorial judge-shopping in the Gambino crime family prosecutions now under way in Brooklyn, yesterday returned the 62 cases to the court clerk for random assignment. Judge Garaufis did not concede the cases were not properly "related" under Local Rule 50.3(a) to earlier cases he had handled, as contended by 37 of the defendants.
